Linux System Engineer
- 12 months contract, renewable
- Work location: Alexandra
The Opportunity
- Provide technical leadership to the project team.
- Assist the Project Manager with regards to resource management, incident reporting and articulation of issues with customer and vendors.
- Project execution will include weekends.
- Perform mass OS, Middleware and Database patching for large number of servers (>1,000) within specific time frame (mass patching sessions include weekends).
- Perform troubleshooting during patching downtime and ensure uptime is met.
- Participate in preparation checks, post patching technical validation and troubleshooting.
- Assist Project Manager in technical communications as needed.
- Liaise with relevant vendor principal support to resolve complex issues.
- Work closely with infrastructure team engineers (especially System Administrators) and management to continuously drive improvement in efficiency and effectiveness through increased automation or process improvement or other means.
- Track issues encountered to minimize or eliminate recurring issues
- Prepare materials for management reporting on issues encountered, action plans to mitigate or address future recurrence and improvement plans.
Your Background
- Minimum 3-5 years in similar capacity.
- Technically sound with good hands-on experience.
- Strong leadership, planning and organizational abilities.
- Proactive in addressing technical and non-technical risks, formulating mitigation and contingency.
- Effective task delegation while retaining accountability for results.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, comfortable in communicating with many different stakeholders at different levels (e.g. engineers, managers, head of department).
- Must have strong system administration background in Linux (preferably Red Hat Enterprise Linux) and shell scripting skills in a large enterprise environment (>1,000 servers).
- Must have experience in supporting and deploying at least one of the following platforms (in addition to Linux):
- Windows Server (including Powershell scripting)
- Solaris
- AIX
- VMware vSphere
- Experience in all or more than one of the above will be an added advantage.
- Familiarity with at least one of the following clustering software will be an added advantage:
- Veritas Cluster Server (on RHEL)
- Microsoft Failover Cluster
- Oracle Solaris Cluster
- IBM PowerHA/HACMP
- Good understanding of Middleware technology.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in Middleware (Weblogic, JBoss, Websphere) administration
- Skill in performing testing and validation of Middleware (Weblogic, JBoss, Websphere) patching.
- Familiarity with backup and recovery procedures for Middleware.
